UNCLE JIMMY - THE KILLER FROM THE MOUNTAINS George "Uncle Jimmy" Barrett’s appearance was deceptive. Grey-haired and bespectacled, he looked more like a schoolteacher or accountant perhaps. In fact, George was an expert car thief and brutal killer - he even shot his mother and sister! His path was destined to cross with that of Special Agent Nelson B. Klein of the relatively newly formed FBI who were keeping a close eye on the man known as "Uncle Jimmy". The meeting was violent and brief with Klein becoming the first federal agent to be shot to death in the line of duty, and Barrett crippled and condemned to a wheelchair by the FBI agents bullets to his knees. The court case that followed resulted in the only verdict the law demanded and George W. Barrett was wheeled into the yard of the Marion County, Indianapolis jail on March 15, 1936 and hung - the last official execution having taken place in the county 49 years before.
