The sinister Madame de Rougierre is employed as governess to the young Maud Ruthven, bringing with her a dark cloud of impending doom that hangs over the whole household. The governess eventually leaves, in possession of a dark secret, but that is not the end of her, much to Maud’s dismay. Maud is later orphaned and sent to live with Uncle Silas, a man with a mysterious and scandalous past, and she once again meets Madame de la Rougierre, whose role in shaping Maud’s destiny becomes all too clear. Occupying the world of spirits, kidnapping and old secrets, Le Fanu’s sensation novel is a chilling and ground- breaking psychological thriller.

A tale of psychological terror, well crafted and well read. Highly recommend to anyone who appreciates a slow buildup and excellent delivery.

A classic thriller

Le Fanu is remembered as one of the 19th century’s best writers of ghost stories. Ghosts are absent, however, in this 1864 novel.
Uncle Silas is a tale of suspense, deception, Gothic terror, and murder. When her wealthy father dies, his sole child and heir, Maud Ruthyn (then in her late teens), is placed in the care of his brother Silas at Bartram-Haugh, a semi-ruinous mansion in rural Derbyshire. Without giving away details of the plot against Maud and her fortune, I will only say that Le Fanu includes a memorable cast of characters and skillfully portrays Maud’s increasing anxiety and eventual terror.
High marks to Georgina Sutton’s reading.
