In der Erzählung geht es um den Besuch eines Gespenstes bei einem einsamen, unglücklichen Mann an einem Abend im November. Er läuft in seinem Zimmer hin und her, ist in konfuser Stimmung und erwägt, noch einmal auszugehen. Da taucht aus dem dunklen Korridor ein kindliches Gespenst auf. Der Mann wird dadurch noch aufgeregter und glaubt kaum, dass das Gespenst wirklich zu ihm will. Dieses beruhigt ihn, alles sei schon richtig - und ein ungewöhnlicher Dialog beginnt.
