The Power of Empowering Others

Leadership isn't easy. It takes grit, courage, and vision, among other things, that can be hard to come by on your toughest days. When leaders and aspiring leaders seek out advice, they're often told to try harder. Dig deeper. Look in the mirror and own your natural-born strengths and fix any real or perceived career-limiting deficiencies.

Frances Frei and Anne Morriss offer a different worldview. They argue that this popular leadership advice glosses over the most important thing you do as a leader: build others up. Leadership isn't about you. It's about how effective you are at empowering other people - and making sure this impact endures even in your absence. As Frei and Morriss show through inspiring stories from ancient Rome to present-day Silicon Valley, the origins of great leadership are found, paradoxically, not in worrying about your own status and advancement, but in the unrelenting focus on other people's potential.

Unleashed provides radical advice for the practice of leadership today. Showing how the boldest, most effective leaders use a special combination of trust, love, and belonging to create an environment in which other people can excel, Frei and Morriss offer practical, battle-tested tools - based on their work with companies such as Uber, Riot Games, WeWork, and others - along with interviews and stories from their own personal experience, to make these ideas come alive. This book is your indispensable guide for unleashing greatness in other people...and, ultimately, in yourself.

Frei and Morriss have leveraged decades of experience and research with leaders and organizations across the globe and industries to unlock the tools leaders need to truly empower everyone around them. I have already incorporated lessons from this book and I’m so grateful.

A must read (listen) for all leaders at every level.

I have only positive perspective for this book. It is great, the content has proved helpful in hiding my thinking and action for our organization. The shared experiences and perspective are incredible as well. My only feedback is that I struggled with the narrator, and I’m not sure why, but the tone and voice made it hard for me to stay engaged, so I did a lot of repeating in parts.

Excellent Content, Very Helpful Book

Im extremely green in this particular section of leadership and I never fully understood the impact that culture has on an organization and its people until I faced those challenges head on within the firm I used to work for.

My mission has become fueled by the inspirational stories told in this book, the experiences of Anne and Frances and I can’t wait to apply what I’ve learned.

Incredible read and will be revisiting the book again and again.

Empowered as a budding organizational culture leader

The authors paint a compelling view of leadership that focuses not just on results but also inner happiness. Typically books of this nature have a bunch of abstract stuff, but in this case all of it is backed by real life examples (that make the concepts easier to understand) and easy-to-remember heuristics and graphs (which really help to make the concepts actionable and teachable to anyone you would want to further dispense this wisdom to). Fantastic read overall.

With everything going on the in the news And country, I still don’t agree that most companies should hire with the goal of diversity, but I do like that this book points out that sometimes the root causes of a lack of diversity isn’t because companies aren’t seeking diversity, but because the pool of people to choose from may not be very diverse. I was also impressed to see that women acknowledging their own potential biases were able to put them aside when reviewing why Harvard promoted mostly male candidates and discovered the root cause is that the women at the time were not submitting as many publications because they were waiting for perfection. Overall, great book and no regrets in purchasing.
