A more intriguing option…

Rebecca, Lady Cornish, is lonely. She comes to Maida Pleasure Gardens, masked and alone, just to feel part of a world that still dances and laughs. But she repels all company – until the mysterious Ludovic Dunne refuses to be dismissed. Intrigued and unwillingly attracted, Rebecca begins to wonder if he might become a friend.

And she is badly in need of friends.

Twice widowed by the age of two-and-twenty, Rebecca is shunned by the ton and reviled as “The Black Widow,” convicted by rumor of murdering her husbands. She endures her isolation but refuses to give up her son to hostile family. Surely Ludovic, a solicitor who specializes in solving people’s knotty problems, is the man to help her fight?

Ludovic, however, is already on a mission to find evidence against her. Haunted by the past, he will never let his heart interfere with justice. By the time he proves the sin is not Rebecca’s, he has lost her trust. But that will not stop him from helping her, even if she never knows.

Mystery and danger culminate inevitably at Maida Gardens, but when Ludovic’s past catches up with him, will love be enough to save him and the woman he loves beyond reason?

And the heroine was a pathetic victim the whole time - even with the hero. Never once took control of herself or anything. It was hard to root for her, though I was rooting for her son. All of the adults, including the H & h were idiots and using him. About 3 hours too long with little happening & more parallel additional "mystery" regarding hero's family. Hard to buy into a "love" that wasn't believably crafted with chemistry. Hard to sit back for the entire story watching heroine & son do nothing about the evil done against them. Hard to understand how the treason plot line fits with any of it. It was like two different stories were competing with each other & touching periodically. Same with the romance, running parallel and barely touching the other plots. it meant a somewhat disjointed story experience. Well written enough to keep the reader listening, but not enough to feel connected and fully focused on the romance or the "mystery." Despite the "he or she feels tingly," there's no chemistry between the H/h. And the mystery doesn't unfold clue by clue enough to make it a true mystery either since all is revealed halfway through. So...3 stars overall.
