For his whole life, Thordric has been told that his magic is dangerous, and that he must never use it.

All over Dinia, half-wizards are treated the same, their magic labelled as dangerous and uncontrollable. But when High Wizard Kalljard dies under mysterious circumstances, it falls to young Thordric to solve the case.

The only trouble? The deed was done by magic, and though Thordric is a half-wizard, he has never fully used his powers. To prove himself right and find the person responsible, Thordric has to learn how to control his own powers.

But can he learn fast enough, and find the perpetrator in time?

A half wizard has no value in a world of magic, but when the high wizard is killed the inspector is forced to set aside his jaffa cakes and rely on his newest detective. Fun coming of age story and an interesting new world. I was given a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.

The story is reminiscent of Harry Potter meets Encyclopedia Brown. It was an enjoyable listen with excellent narration. Magic in the story is used more as a tool while the plot focuses more on solving the mystery of a political murder. It would be an worthwhile addition to any middle school children's (and older) reading list and would provide an opportunity for discussion on the injustices that can result from allowing biases due to differences to exist as half-wizards are treated as sub-class citizens despite possessing formidable abilities.

Unofficial Detective, Book 1 is a fantasy/mystery story that is pretty captivating. I feel like this is something that my middle school boys would really love listening to/reading. The pacing of the story is great, and it feels like it just speeds by as you get drawn in by the story. I found the narration by Morgan Keller to be quite entertaining. Overall, 5 stars! Looking forward to book 2.

Great Pacing!
