Chicago, 1861 After years of painful separation, Justin Young finally locates his orphaned siblings—on opposite sides of the Civil War. Setting aside his budding romance, he brings his widowed sister and younger brothers home to Chicago, determined that the ties of the same blood are strong enough to bring them together despite the secrets they each carry from their pasts.

But faced with his inadequacies as a provider and leader, Justin discovers that real love is the hard work of granting grace and second chances to imperfect, hurting people with whom he has nothing in common. In the end, the Youngs discover that when they come home to God, He gives them the courage, freedom and grace to come home to the people they’ve come to love.

In this emotional story filled with humor and thoughtful faith, Yankee siblings come head-to-head with Confederate ones, Christian siblings with atheists, educated siblings with those raised on the street, and extroverted siblings with introverts. Set in Civil War Chicago, with its labor strikes and the Camp Douglas prison camp, you’ll find characters you’ve come to love and won't soon forget.

This was a marvelous Christian historical novel that took place during the American civil war. The characters were portrayed very well… with both believable strengths and weaknesses, and the lifestyles that were in this book were appropriate to the era. Some of the words used were modern, but the meaning was clear, and the message was always present. Some of the Christian themes were touted a bit strongly, but overall the effect was uplifting, morally clean, and family friendly. I like this author and can trust that her books are always entertaining, uplifting, and engaging.

This was a good story, it was difficult to listen to sometimes because there was a lot of sadness throughout it but it had a happy ending.

The story of God’s love and family

A little too long but a great story about God's faithful love for everyone. Also His love for the family.

God's faithfulness.

Overall I enjoyed this book. I felt the main character deviated from the person the author had portrayed him to be in the beginning, but in the end he redeemed himself. I will await book 2 as I would like to see how the other siblings move forward. I struggled with the narrator in this book. If I didn't know better I would have thought it was a virtual voice for probably the first third of the book but he did get better. I might have appreciated it more with a different narrator.

Waiting for book 2.
