"I’m a murderer. Once you kill someone, you’re a murderer for life. It changes you.”

It's been three months since Casey McClair fought and survived a harrowing ordeal with a cold-blooded serial killer. No one expected her to bounce back right away, but Casey's agonizing recovery is riddled with more than trauma.

Night terrors tangle with daytime drama as she fights to find her way to recovery in this second novel in The Waiting Mortuary series.

Received as an audio review copy from Story Origin, this is an honest review. Beautifully narrated by Debbie Soelter, Vigil Black is the amazingly poignant and profound sequel to The Waiting Mortuary, Casey McClair has survived serial killer Devin Fish's house of of horrors but the experience has left her shattered and a shadow of the person she once was. Cared by an aunt that has no patience for either Casey or her step brother and treated by the town seeing her as a bizarre freak or any out right murderer; Casey struggles with haunting nightmares and dark visions of those she would love to take her hatred out upon. After meeting a young man whose become fascinated by Casey's trauma, Lance turns out to be a lifeline for her to confront the dark, twisted memories that come from the Waiting Mortuary. As new and even more sinister events unfold, Casey finds herself once again the target of another twisted soul that believes by tearing apart those Casey cares for will turn her into something for more dangerous than the killer Casey murdered.

Book 2 marks a distinct departure from its predecessor, emerging as an entirely unique experience. Newcomers can dive right into this sequel without feeling adrift. Unlike the original's dark ambiance, this installment weaves a tapestry of mystery. There were moments where I found myself retracing chapters, thinking I must have missed something, only to discover that patience would have alleviated my confusion. The book was engaging enough that I finished it in a day. While my personal preference leans towards the first book, this sequel enriches the overarching enigma of the waiting mortuary.

I wondered how they would follow up with the first book... they followed up very well. I try to guess how the murder mystery will end. this one had a few twist that i didnt see coming. I really like that the books are individual on their own but also a continuation of each other. As far as the story goes... i really enjoyed it. You could tell that the anticipation was building & right up till the end you dont discover all that happened. It is horror, brutal (again not overly done), & when not being those two suspenseful. Now im anxious to start the 3rd book & see what new twist are thrown in there & how & if the story again ties the 3 books together... well done...thank you!

horrifically enjoyable
