Celebrated for both his novels and memoirs, Don J. Snyder is also the recipient of a James Michener Fellowship. A story of love and dedication, Walking with Jack chronicles Snyder’s dream to caddie for his son Jack's pro golf tour debut. At nearly 60, Snyder left Maine for Scotland - the birthplace of golf - where he learned the game and earned his spot as a full-time caddie. His journey would finally coincide with Jack’s own struggles in one of the PGA’s toughest qualifying events.

The overall theme of the book is an interesting one, and there are some lovely sections with poignant observations provided in a touching and eloquent manner. But, as the author himself notes, he often struggles to convey ideas and events succinctly. The book becomes ponderous and repetitious with a number of scenes or musings described multiple times in different sections. At times it also takes on a highly self-absorbed and depressing viewpoint, and the author offers little insight into anyone other than himself. Given the length of the book, this becomes tiresome. With good editing, this book would have been reduced by one third and made much more engaging. As it is, I found myself working hard to not to give up reading, and I finished it primarily to discover how the son’s pro tour effort ended. I recommend it only to readers with a lot of free time.

A book with a better concept than execution

What made the experience of listening to Walking with Jack the most enjoyable?

The story, a father wanting the best for his son, doing what he has to, too help.

Have you listened to any of Graham Rowat’s other performances before? How does this one compare?

No, but I loved his voice. Made the Scotland parts more to form. Brought you into the story.

Any additional comments?
