A groundbreaking look at the history of transgender representation in TV and film, by an of-the-moment and in-demand culture reporter. Narrated by Tre'vell Anderson, WE SEE EACH OTHER is a personal history of trans visibility since the beginning of moving images. A literary reckoning, it unearths a transcestry that's long existed in plain sight and in the shadows of history's annals, and further contextualizes our present moment of increased representation. The films and television shows that Tre'vell covers include: Midnight In The Garden Of Good And Evil, Psycho, Holiday Heart, Boy's Don't Cry, America's Next Top Model, Some Like It Hot, Survivor, Tangerine, Pose, RuPaul's Drag Race and much more. Though there have been trans memoirs and histories, there has never been a book quite like this, nor is anyone more suited to write it than Tre'vell. "I don't remember exactly when I was taught to hate myself," says Tre'vell Anderson in We See Each Other's introduction. As the narrative unfolds, Tre'vell knits together the history of trans people on screen with stories of their life growing up and their formative experiences as a Black, trans journalist.

Very detailed and educational. I learned even more about trans history and historical figures that helped pave the way our community.

I heard about this on an NPR podcast, and I was happy to listen to it. I can’t imagine anyone other than the author reading this book. If you have the slightest interest in this subject, I encourage you to check out this book.

Informative and humorous

I love this author’s work. They are thoughtful and insightful. I am very upset about the poor editing of the audiobook. They authors words were cut out at the end of sentences throughout the entire book. It should be re-edited and released. This edit is a true disservice to brilliant writer and storyteller.

Tre'vell is one of my favorite news podcasters & I was so excited to listen to their audiobook specifically. As a cis-het whyte lady of nearly 50 years of age, I knew some of these names & stories. I have now been to SCHOOL. I've lived in the midst of the east coast liberal elite since I moved to Massachusetts in 1993, have known & loved queer & trans people for 30 years, but this book was a masterclass. Thank you, Tre'vell. Catch you on the WAD squad tomorrow. Mwah.

The world needs this book!

Tre’vell is an excellent journalist and cultural historian. I absolutely loved learning about the various experiences of trans and otherly gendered folx including their bio which also did not disappoint. The viewing guide, the animated storytelling, the honesty and the associated podcast made this feel like full course for university credit. The book has opened my eyes and heart in so many ways. Such a great listen!
