Jan Burke has carefully built a world for herself where she can be protected from the painful memories of the past tragedies in her life. As a third-grade teacher in a small town in Kentucky, she founds it easy to avoid the three social situations that she fears the most; weddings, funerals, and dates. Her carefully protected world serves her well until the beginning of her third year of teaching. Her best friend, Casey, is getting married, forcing her into the middle of the wedding festivities. Then Casey’s old college friend, Mark Owens moves to town. Jan finds the fact that he is a funeral director unsettling, because of the heartbreaking memories his professions stirs up for her. Just when she is able to accept him as a friend, Jan begins to notice something peculiar going on in Bellville. Why are so many seemingly healthy people in this small town dying in their sleep? As the number of these deaths by “natural causes” grows, so does Jan’s anxiety. Are these deaths really “natural” or is something more sinister going on?
