LUCKY WOLFESON is declared legally dead after a flashflood sweeps her SUV into a streambed on the island of Maui. Why she “died” is at the heart of this story of serial murders, abuse, illegal sales of Hawai’ian land, and love gone wrong.

News of a killing shocks and seems rare; yet killing is a fascinating and quite common occurrence.

What if the killer is kind, compassionate, and never prone to any sort of violence?

LUCKY's story is a detailed account of what makes a good person do very, very bad things. After the deaths of her beloved children, life as she’s known it falls apart. She moves to Maui. There, she tries to learn local ways. But, she fails to recognize the value of the island’s history and the strength of its spirituality, a failing that turns lethal.

As an artist, her desire is to create. But, as circumstances collide, her need to destroy grows equally strong. LUCKY’S own rage and desire for revenge suddenly erupt when she is faced with abuse.

No one suspects LUCKY might be alive after her body disappears in the flash flood. Neither does anyone suspect the rash of visitor drownings on Maui might not be accidental but rather at the hands of a serial killer.

I read this book before listening and already had affection for a serial killer who was a generous though sometimes spiteful and vengeful. As a haole long-time resident of Hawaii and Maui, the protagonist suffers from ill-informed discrimination so her reactions and even crimes seem justified. Arabella Ark reads her story in a melodic, sometimes ethereal, and sometimes hypnotic voice that belies the underlying venom. An intriguing bedtime story.
