This is a simple story of a battle; such a tale as may be told by a soldier who is no writer to a reader who is no soldier. Ambrose Bierce wrote many fictional short stories about the Civil War. This is his experience at Shiloh. As a Vietnam veteran, I was taken back to a rice paddy just outside of Ben Cat, South Vietnam in 1965.
