These historical fiction stories take the listener on a journey into the most tragic time in our history—the Civil War. Arranged along a rough timeline of the period, they cover a broad area of mood and events and range from a young man’s escape from an outlaw gang in Missouri to join a North Carolina regiment back home, to the discovery of Lee’s lost orders by a Union sergeant, to a boy too curious about war, to a young woman who has dressed like a man to join her brother in the war, to enemies who become friends over a fishing hole. A couple of the stories feature iconic leaders Stonewall Jackson and Colonel Joshua L. Chamberlain, and one is told by General Sheridan’s horse, Rienzi, of the famous ride that turned the tide at Cedar Creek.

The series of stories were written from various points of view of Confederate soldiers, Union soldiers and civilians, even a horse. The stories were very engaging and emotional. The narration was excellent!

The author’s style brought humor and pathos to these accounts of the Civil War told from both sides, high ranked and no-ranked individuals. Slave and owner, military and non-military.
Loved the narrator’s interpretation of each character’s voice. Wonderful read! Hated it to end. Please write more and include Mr. O’Rourke’s narration on the next book.

Both the stories and narration were alluring and captivating. Each story drew me in with perspectives that allowed me to easily imagine the scenes and characters. One need not know a great deal about the Civil War period, but will gain an appreciation for how it impacted people on a personal level. I'd love to see this author and narrator team up again.

Alluring and captivating.
