For 13-year-old Sarah Waldman, life in the small Polish town of Olkusz is idyllic, grounded in her loving, close-knit family and the traditions of their Jewish faith.

But in 1939, as the Nazis come to power, a storm is gathering - a relentless, unforgiving storm that will sweep Sarah and her family into years of turmoil in the ghetto and concentration camps, tearing them apart. Will Sarah’s strong will and determination be enough for her to survive when everything she loves is taken from her?

Part memoir, part fiction, What She Lost is the reimagined true-life story of the author’s grandmother growing into a woman amid the anguish of the Holocaust. It is a tale of resilience, rebuilding a life, and rediscovering love.

A fascinating and thrilling story of life of the author’s grandmother during WWII and immediately after. A must read for those wanting to enrich their knowledge of how Jewish families triumph over extreme peril.

An enthralling story

Great listen of a not great period in world history. What was great was how many people known and unknown in so many ways came together to defeat such a miss guided tyranny. This story is about some of those people. When you put your head on a soft down pillow and pull up a warm down comforter think of Sarah. Her family at Downlite might have made that comforter and pillow.

A true family story that lives on today.

What She Lost is a beautiful and heartbreaking telling of the author’s grandmother’s experiences in the lead up to and aftermath of World War II. The book stayed with me for a long time after I finished reading it. The author did an incredible job of conveying the suspense, fear, and suffering that the main character and her family experienced in the years and months before ultimately being separated in the Holocaust. But it also struck a hopeful chord with the focus on how survivors tried to rebuild their lives after being liberated from the camps. Strongly recommend this book.

Beautiful, haunting story
