The hilarious and controversial host of HBO’s Real Time with Bill Maher has written his funniest, most opinionated, and most necessary book ever—a brilliantly astute and acerbically funny vivisection of American life, politics, and culture.

Some of the smartest commentary about what’s happening in America is coming from a comedian—this comedian being Bill Maher. If you want to understand what’s wrong with this country, it turns out that one of the best informed and most thought-provoking analysts is this very funny pothead.

The book was inspired by the “editorial” Bill delivers at the end of each episode of Real Time. These editorials are direct-to-camera sermons about culture, politics, and what’s happening in the world. To put this book together, Maher reviewed more than a decade of his editorials, rewriting, reimagining, and updating them. Free speech, cops, drugs, race, religion, the generations, cancel culture, the parties, the media, show biz, romance, health—Maher covers it all. The result is a hugely entertaining work of commentary about American culture in the tradition of Mark Twain, Will Rogers, and H. L. Mencken.

Back in 2010 while I was sitting in a grad school class, I found myself defending a little paper I wrote about the direction news was going, my worry about its opinionated direction vs factual discussion and bluntly, and proudly, stated that it was my prediction that news would get so toxic, people would not only lean into satirical news for the levity but for the honesty. Comedy is honesty and Bill Maher has been this steward of satire for decades. Years later, Bill reigns as a voice of clarity in the cacophony that is the current news world and this book adds to it.

This fantastic compilation of editorials over 20 years rings of foreshadowing, humor, well researched policy issues and a clarity of voice for our current state of affairs in the United States. It’s not just a great book, it’s a wake up call to think clearer, ask better questions, forgive more, listen harder and try to have a laugh, especially at our ourselves.

Honest, well researched and above all, funny

I’ve looked for the bad in Bill about as much as I listen to him for the laughs. The man is on the nose about so many things. Yes, he can sound like grandpa, but he’s earned it. Seems like his editing team are there to guide him and they did a very good job of taking the edge off— his take in love throughout is surprising and refreshing. Good things in here. Funny. And entertainingly narrated. Four stars because there is always room for improvement. Let’s be real.
