The book is s decent work for lovers of British crime, but I think a reader with a graver delivery would complement it better. The reader is skilled, but uses a lilting, light tone that detracts from the subject matter, murder. I found myself unsure whether the author meant to be tongue in cheek, or it just sounded that way. I may have to read, rather than listen, to this series in order to form my own opinion.

Is the reader the problem?

Lately I've been listening to book after book of the heroine baker saves the day and needed something different. I found it. I was amazed how Barnett makes the heroes in this series a community of characters and not just one person. I love how we learn of the main characters back stories and personal struggles instead of here are 2 cops and this is the case. The story line is good and the villains are colorful. I really liked the narrator. His character voices helped me to flesh out the people in the story. I'll be searching for more Barnett...keep writing!

I needed a change and this was it!

I like me the main characters of this series but wish the plots were more complex.

I love the characters in these books. The author has made them authentic and multidimensional. The dialogue has the dry humor you can imagine in a workplace. The plot is excellent and the story moves along such you hate to stop listening. The narrator is outstanding.

Great!
