A hiker stumbles on a gruesome species undiscovered by science… An injury triggers an appalling new ability… A domestic pet holds a household in thrall... A human monster finally meets his match… Crimes against nature birth an abomination…

These and fifteen more tales make up WHERE THE SHADOWS ARE SHOWN, a short story collection by Josh Schlossberg (author of CHARWOOD and MALINAE), who guides you on a trek through the shadowy realms of biological and folk horror, supernatural and weird fiction.

So, lace up your boots, fill your water bottle, and put fresh batteries in the flashlight, because there’s not a chance in hell you’re getting back before dark.

I took a chance on a relative newcomer to the horror genre. Mr. Schlossberg gave out a limited amount of codes, so I thought to give an honest review.

Some stories will make you lock your doors, check your car's backseat, and even make you ponder buying some bug spray (The Connecticut Witch Panic, Creepy Old Dude, and Drain). Other stories will give you a good fear-induced laugh (Six Ways To Beat Your Landlord, There Is No Zombie Outbreak!, and The Dungwich Horror). Two standout stories (The Lemon Tree and The Hand You're Dealt) will stick with me for a very long time.

I thoroughly enjoyed the 20+ offerings, and I have Schlossberg followed for the next audiobook release!

I keep writing in reviews that horror is not one of my preferred genres, but I think this book has permanently changed that idea. With the feeling that I just binge-watched a season of Black Mirror or Twilight Zone, the varied style and mid- to dark tones herein were delightfully crafted in dark thoughts and character actions, with occasional supernatural or other devious forces in play. Tony Deurmier brought each story to life with impeccable narration and a silky smooth delivery spoken calmly over the dust of a recently unburried coffin. The 20+ mini-adventures kept me fully engaged and definitely wanting more at the end. Here's hoping for a volume 2 at some point in the future. [Disclosure: I received this title for free and listened at 1.5x.]
