Maisie French thought being a godly wife meant saying “yes,” even when her heart whispered “no.”

From the outside, Alec is a respected husband—well-versed in scripture, admired at church. But behind closed doors, he uses the Bible not to lead with love, but to manipulate, shame, and take. Each time Maisie hesitates, he reminds her: You’re my wife. This is your duty.

Maisie feels her voice slipping away—her body no longer her own. She wonders if God expects her to endure the darkness as part of obedience… or if something sacred has been lost along the way.

In the quiet moments of prayer and tears, Maisie begins to hear another voice. A gentle whisper cutting through the fear. A God who doesn’t coerce, but comforts. Who doesn’t demand, but defends. And who calls her beloved—not broken.

Whispers in the Dark is a raw and redemptive story of sexual coercion within marriage, spiritual gaslighting, and one woman’s journey to reclaim her worth and her body through the healing love of a Savior who never intended for love to hurt.

The wife in this story sounds and acts just like the wife in the book The Empty Chair; she's nieve and has no voice yet again, but its a series and so i get it now. It was hard getting thrown the portions of the book where Maise was being manipulated, but then she came to know the truth and could no longer deceivd. I was so annoyed by the husband and his blatant selfishness. The way the role of the husband and wife was broken down from the Bible was so refreshing. It's so sad how scripture is twisted and misused to manipulate. I would recommend this is other marriage women and those contemplating marriage. I began to enjoy the book more after her counseling session with the counselor that stopped to listen and walked her through the scriptures. Beautifully done. So refreshing as well that she was able to discerning the voice of the Holy Spirit speaking to her spirit.

The book turned out to be very good. I actually had to get back on here to change my review.
