The wind rolled gently over the hills of Halewood, carrying with it the scent of damp earth, old roses, and something far more intangible memory. It had been twelve years since Christopher Hale last set foot in the village, yet nothing had changed. The ivy still curled along the stone walls of the old chapel. The cobbled streets bore the same weary charm. Even the fields stretched wide and golden, untouched by time.

He stood by the wrought-iron gate of Rosevale Hall, hands in his coat pockets, gazing at the grand structure beyond. The manor rose with quiet dignity, its honey-colored stone glowing in the soft blush of evening. Lanterns lined the gravel path, flickering like whispers, as guests filtered in for the annual charity gala.

Christopher wasn’t here to socialize.

He wasn’t here for nostalgia.

He was here for the past. To walk through the ashes. To see the ruins for himself.

Twelve years ago, his family’s name had been dragged through the mud and left to drown. Edward Vance beloved entrepreneur, philanthropist, and local hero—had betrayed Christopher’s father, dismantling the Hale legacy piece by piece. Now, Edward was long dead.
