Liara Roux is accustomed to being mislabeled and misunderstood.

As a child, Liara’s inquisitive, instinctive, and rebellious nature was frequently problematized, in a world designed around the requirements of their neurotypical, cis, heterosexual male colleagues. Coming of age in an oppressively restrictive home, they shuffled tarot and explored self portraiture to rationalize the injustice of chronic pain, toxic lovers, and the cruel silence of divinity.

Critiquing capitalism’s mechanisms of exploitation, the conservatism of Western medicine, and the politics surrounding sex work, Whore of New York: A Confession is a candid study of artistic awakening, and both spiritual and sexual growth after abuse, seen through the eyes of a proud outsider.

I didn't want this book to end! I got the audiobook format. I enjoyed the story and the author did a great job reading it.
I loved hearing her perspectives. Liara shares candidly without pushing the reader to change or need to agree with her, her tone feels very fluid and non-judgemental, and she really owns her story, both the celebration and the darkness.
Liara's views resonate with me and put words to things I've felt but couldn't articulate. She makes edgy topics ok to talk about and normalizes the human experience while at the same time makes it fascinating. She is addressing sex work but there layers of life and the human condition within hunan sexuality, and it's interesting to read about how she navigated different situations. I love how she can detail experiences she's had without identifying with them or internalizing any shame. And some of what she shares is really sexy.
I feel hopeful and empowered after reading this book. I'm buying a hardcopy after this! I may also have a crush.

Now I have a crush on her!

I read this book with my eyes first. I was in love with Liara from the first few page. This audiobook gave me even more joy. It's exactly what I was expecting—everything is just as it says on the tin. Heartily recommend!🍄

This came up a couple times as a recommended read. I’m glad I chose to listen to it. The author is very brave and straightforward. She introduces a world I had little insight into. I have a dear friend that is a sex worker and they’ve helped me understand that they love what they do. I thought I had no basis to understand from personal experience. Turns out that it’s a lot different than my conservative biased view allowed me to see. No matter what your values are, if you can listen with an open heart you’ll walk away with a healthy respect for what sex workers do and why. As members of society, it helps to consider points of view that you’ve never considered. Liara Roux displays stunning depth and insight into not just sex workers, but the human condition. I can’t wait to read what she publishes next! Hats off!

Brilliant!

A great perspective, open and free, liberated. I also found it inspiring, to be better, and notice what’s wrong g with the world! Her voice is quite beautiful too!
