Five orphans. Two sword-wielding vigilantes. One mansion. No rules.

April thought she had her happy ending. After all, she has her new house and new friends and new guardian. But she also has a very big new secret.

The kids of Winterborne House are the only ones who know that Gabriel Winterborne - famous billionaire and terrible cook - is really a sword-wielding vigilante.

What they don’t know is that he’s not the only one.

When a masked figure breaks in, looking for something - or someone - it’s clear that Gabriel has met his match, and now no one is safe. April and her friends will have to solve a decades-old mystery in order to hang on to the most important thing in the world: each other.

I really enjoy Ally Carter books and the Winterborne books do not disappoint. I liked the 1st one, but this one is even better. April’s complicated relationships with all the adults in her life are skillfully drafted. I absolutely love this series.

This is book 2 of the Winterborne Home series to be read in order. Full of family, adventure and mystery this is a great series for both children and adults. Yes, I’m an adult, loved it and hope there will be more books in this series.

I loved it!

We read the two Winterborne books with our daughter when she was still 6. Got them from the library after learning she loved mysteries through Nancy Drew and the Clue Crew series and an audible book about the mystery of the silver buttons. She LOVED both Winterborne books, so I got them on audible so she could listen to them at night to fall asleep. We’ve had them on here for a while now. She loves them and requests them more than any other audible book. There’s some talk of blood and I think I recall some unsavory language and behaviors as well, but if you’re good at communicating with your children about that and what you expect from them regardless of fictional characters in a story, you should be fine with 6-12yo kids listening to this story. My nephew who just turned 7 was scared of this one because they talk about someone covered in blood in one part. So as long as you know your audience and know what genre they’re into, it should be fine.

Good mystery for young readers
