A hidden past. A house with secrets. And one chance for two wounded hearts to find love together.

Northern England, Late Fall, 1820

Katherine Lockwood is hiding for her life in the most unlikely of places: the forgotten priest holes in the abandoned Winterset Grange Manor House. When Kate learns that Winterset’s long-absent owner, Mr. Oliver Jennings, is about to return, she is desperate to find a way to make him leave, even if it means “haunting” him from behind her protective walls.

After a grand tour of the Continent, Oliver returns home to England determined to make the most of his inheritance. But from the moment he arrives, nothing is as he expected. His manor is in disrepair, the steward hired to care for his estate is a thief, and to top it all off, Winterset is haunted. Undeterred, Oliver resolves to reclaim his life piece by piece.

When Oliver discovers the hidden rooms, he’s shocked and pleased that his “ghost” is actually a beautiful young woman. Captivated by Kate and her story, he invites her to stay at Winterset under his protection.

Yet danger persists as the man who threatens Kate’s safety learns of her ruse and attempts to exact his revenge. Kate and Oliver find themselves ensnared in a perilous game of cat and mouse against a powerful opponent while also trying to untangle their blossoming feelings in this enthralling gothic Regency romance.

What an amazing story! I laughed, I swooned, and I sat on the edge of my seat dining my nails! This book was clean and uplifting with great character growth and a whole lot of emotional tension! The narrators both did amazing jobs, too!

I loved the premise and the love story. Clean and no swearing. I loved hearing Oliver’s pov and his perspective on summerhaven.

Super sweet and funny

Exceptional! This book somehow has it all, humor and healing, danger and suspense, well developed characters, and a super-sweet romance. There are many laugh-out-loud moments, especially in the first half of the book (the dialogue between Mrs Owensby and Oliver is hilarious 😂). The later part of the book turns more to danger and action, and wow, that ending got intense!

I appreciate that the author didn’t push anything too far. Just as I started to feel a twinge of annoyance over Kate’s continued pranks, Odekirk brought them to an end. Just as I thought we were going to slip into miscommunication and insecurities, we get a beautifully crafted letter putting everything on the table… And the ending, though more intense than I typically prefer, doesn’t stretch too long and wraps up nicely.

This is a great book and I thoroughly enjoyed it. Highly recommended!

Content:
There is no foul language or sex. There is some violence relating to the villain, but it’s not excessive or overly detailed. The romance is limited to lightly descriptive kisses. There is no mention of faith or God.

Trigger warnings - a female character is assaulted and abducted; death/murder of a parent; mention of an abusive father (past)
