Massachusetts, 1692 Edgar Wilkins is on trial. The coven are nervous, and Dr. Gregor Meissner has noticed that there are some strange things occurring in Notley Village. People at death’s door miraculously being healed, rumours and superstitions abound and, to his surprise, he is prepared to give evidence to the witchfinders to rid the county of the scourge of witchcraft, if only the evidence proves it beyond a doubt. But, as he ferrets around the village, looking for information, Gregor realizes that the problem is far greater than he ever could have imagined. More than half the town seems to be involved in witchcraft and debauchery, and many of the most high-ranking members of the community are the ringleaders. Catherine Gale, his nurse, sees how agitated he is and agrees to help him get to the bottom of things. Little does he know that she is a member of the coven and has been tasked to try to steer him away from the truth or to at least find out what he knows. She senses something in Gregor and wonders if there is a way that she might convert him to their path rather than trying to steer him from the truth he so desperately seeks.
