Halloween is a wild, weird night in the lonely moorland towns of the north. It's dark and cold, and cracks can open up in the fabric of the safest world.

Davey Bell has been trying to live safely. He's struggled through a rough adolescence and has a decent job, a home of his own. He agrees to a meeting with his ex, even though Burdo got him into so much trouble in the past.

But Burdo has plans, armed robbery among them. When Davey recoils from his efforts at blackmail, Burdo swears he'll track him down. There's something inhuman about Burdo's rage, and Davey panics and runs from him. The town is small, the darkness beyond it absolute. Davey has lived there all his life, but he takes a wrong turn on the moorland road and is suddenly lost.

It's the first night of winter and set to freeze hard. Not much chance of survival for a man without shelter, a man on the run from his past... Then Davey stumbles into the forest, and his fears of Burdo and the cold dissolve to nothing at the sound of deep, bestial growls.

The moon is full. Ancient moorland legends are coming to life in its silvery radiance. Out of the woodland steps a strange young man, and the snarling beasts fall back. He's offering sanctuary, but at what price? He's the most beautiful creature Davey has ever seen. If Davey follows him in fascination through the gateway of Wolf Hall, what secrets will unfold before the dawn?

I really enjoyed the characters & reader. The narrator's voice was perfect for the story and just lulled the listener into the tale very pleasantly. Good storyline, too. I like the relationship between the wolves and the town folks.

Great story!

The novella opens with an interesting thriller plot, but that is forgotten about halfway through for a rather boring bit of erotica. All of the plot and characters set up in the first half are dropped in the second half.

SPOILERS

The story begins with the lead’s sketchy ex trying to blackmail him into participating in a robbery. Later the lead decides to call the police to report the crime, knowing that he will likely go to jail too if his ex carries through with the blackmail. But before he makes the call, he is almost murdered by his ex, escapes, and runs out onto the moor. This first half was interesting and well developed.

But it grinds to a screeching halt there, and a new much more dull plot starts: he meets a beautiful young shirtless man who turns out to be a super sexy werewolf. But true love or something cures the werewolf plot. And in the morning the lead is shocked to learn this vision of sexiness is a virgin! Gasp! ...and also gag. I have to admit that I didn’t quite finish it. I didn’t care enough about the characters to be interested in hearing about their inevitable tumble into each other’s sexybits. I assume that some half hearted ending to the first plot was stuck in at the end, but it seems clear that the potentially interesting story was just being used as a way to set up some sex.

Plot forgotten halfway through

I can only have one possible complaint. This should be a complete series of books. I can absolutely feel the warm unshakeable love these characters will develop through the bond of a fated pair, and there is an appeal to that concept. The security of knowing you are each other's perfect and only match. As if the very essences of who you are, fit like puzzle pieces.

great short story.

after listening to several others of Harper's books, this one, in general, was decent enough, but what lowered the stars for me was it was hard to tell the difference between who was speaking sometimes and I got Laure and David mixed up a lot

Certainly could've been better

I've enjoyed several of Harper Fox's books and this one is no exception. It's a really sweet little story and I enjoy Tim Gilbert's narration. He does a great job of bringing the characters and the world around them to life.
I also love the glimpse into small/nearly obscure Cornish village life Harper Fox has put into several of her books. It's a way of life that not many people can even fathom anymore with all our high technology and big cities.

If you give this a try and enjoy it, then definitely check out her Tyack and Frayne mystery series.

Cute short story
