in the case of beginning authors, how-to guides are useless unless you actually do something with that knowledge. and let's just say it out loud and embrace this sad fact... there is a difference between an AUTHOR and a WRITER. my mom has a shelf full of "How to write" books, and she sure does write. But she's NEVER published anything. she always gets cold feet. she's okay with that. she's comfortably retired, writing is her hobby, publishing a book is her dream...
in my case, i actually want to publish. i was raised around writers and authors. my mom would drag me to the FSU campus once a week to attend writer's critique groups where an eclectic group of people, all ages and walks of life, would gather around and share their stories. i picked up a lot of knowledge on critiquing, writing and editing as a result. it's sort of made me a snob when it comes to literature.
LATELY.... everything i've read has been absolute garbage. I want to be someone who actually changes that and gives readers something WORTH reading - yeah it's .99 cent, but why on earth would you insult your reader by wasting their time AND money on poor quality writing and stories? I am not afraid to leave those harsh reviews because I DO expect better.
Now, the only problem with this book is it could really use an updated chapter about NOT selling your soul and publishing AI slop. It's RAMPANT, especially in this genre. maybe some people don't care or notice.... but I do. and it's infuriating.
As for the rest of the book, i can't speak for whether or not the info is "dated" in regards to the mechanics of publishing and formatting. I suppose I will soon find out. But I am thankful she published this book because it does give me an idea of where to begin. That's incredibly motivating and helpful.
Bit Dated, Still Useful
