She isn’t a stranger to survival. But can she persevere when the North invades her home and shatters their way of life?
Florida, 1862. Mary Adeline Walker Andrews cannot falter. Worried about her husband and eldest son fighting in the Civil War, the strong-willed mother of eleven wields faith and resourcefulness to keep her household running and her family fed. And as the country’s conflict rages on, the level-headed matriarch fights to defend against deserters, raids, and the growing fear of loss.
But she struggles to maintain her optimism when the Union seizes control of her town. With the military enforcing Reconstruction on the community by replacing local leaders with outsiders, Mary is determined to safeguard her children when resentment and strife swell.
With sweeping changes reshaping the South, can she piece together what remains and rebuild their future?
Based on four decades of research and investigating family history, Cindy Roe Littlejohn recreates the lives and experiences of Old Florida during a chaotic time of change. As you explore the endurance and quiet strength of Southern women, you will forever remember this vanished world.
Yankees in the Courthouse is the fascinating third book in the award-winning Palmetto Pioneers creative nonfiction series. If you like historical biographies, hopeful heroines who never give up, and fresh perspectives, then you’ll love Cindy Roe Littlejohn’s powerful story.

I sincerely hope the author will pick another relative from Jefferson county, perhaps born in the 1890’s, to carry the story of the most beautiful part of our countries’ greatest state up to the lifetime of the author herself. I for one would certainly buy more books like these.
This author made a dismal period worth reading about!
