Following volume one, 'The Best of Days', and set in the 1950s, this is part two of a memoir of a radio officer in the great days of the British Merchant Navy. We take voyages to the East on steamships with British and Indian crews. We visit the Ganges delta, Calcutta, Madras, Ceylon, Eritrea, Egypt, and the United States. Here is valve wireless equipment before the age of transistors. Telegraph keys. Morse code. Early Radar. And India just twelve years after independence. In 2022 a third volume is in progress. This gentleman is a real find. The writing is rich and crunchy and full of the sea. A young man casts off to find his future on the high seas as a radio operator. On the way he finds his true love and the reader must wait along with the protagonist for their next meeting. The anticipation is filled with fascinating tales of the life and history of the ports between England and India. Part travelogue and part history this book does not disappoint in any way. I look forward to the time spent listening. And grateful that I stumbled into finding this writer. Bravo Mr. Nicholson.
