Ífè Myths presents one of the earliest English-language collections of Yoruba sacred stories—gathered directly from the people of Southwestern Nigeria during the author’s years of service as an Assistant District Officer. Living among Yoruba communities, the collector gained rare access to fragments of oral tradition, ritual incantations, and passing references that, when carefully assembled, reveal glimpses of the spiritual worldview that shaped one of Africa’s greatest civilizations.

Because Yoruba religious knowledge was traditionally guarded and transmitted through priests, diviners, and initiated lineages, outsiders often encountered respectful silence on sacred matters. Much of what was shared came indirectly—through chants offered in ritual settings, proverbs spoken during council meetings, or casual remarks overheard in moments of trust. These fragments required patience, sensitivity, and deep listening to preserve without distortion. The author’s aim was not to impose interpretation but to present these narratives with fidelity, acknowledging the limits of an outsider’s perspective while honoring the integrity of Yoruba belief.

The resulting myths—spare, symbolic, and filled with elemental power—speak of creation, destiny, the Orisha, and the mysteries of Ife, the spiritual cradle of the Yoruba people. Their poetic, uncertain, and sometimes dreamlike quality reflects the nature of oral cosmology itself: layered, metaphorical, and alive with meanings that cannot always be captured in straightforward prose. To preserve this resonance, many of the stories are rendered in blank verse, allowing the cadence and force of the original tradition to shine through more naturally than conventional narrative style could permit.

Ífè Myths remains an important early window into Yoruba cosmology and an enduring testament to the depth of West African spiritual imagination.

A very interesting and captivating take on the Yoruba gods. Short but meaningful, however, it would have been better if a Yoruba speaking narrator was used.
