High Horse Press and Cathi Colas Audiobooks present GRIMM WOMEN: And the End of Ever After. Original Grimm tales written by Jacob and Wilhelm Grimm. Villain Essays written by Cathi Colas.

Alas, this is the last episode of this book. Next season will be a surprise (for me as well as you). But today we have Snow White and the Evil Queen. We all age out of the beauty market at one point, but thankfully we don’t all become deranged. Or we get just a little deranged and leave it at that. Again, beauty prevails, but the Queen does have something to say about it. Then in the Afterwards, we tie up this little glimpse into the lives of our princesses and villains. I hope you have all enjoyed listening to Grimm Women as much as I enjoyed putting it together.

Stay tuned next week. We’ll either be going to Sea or an English Garden. Enjoy.

I hope you have been enjoying these episodes as much as I enjoy bringing them to you.

Today we have episode 4. Briar Rose (AKA) Sleeping Beauty and her Nemesis Fairy #13.

Fairy 13 was miffed. She was not invited to the King’s Feast. Briar Rose takes a long nap (thanks to Fairy 12. F13 wanted to kill her), and wakes to the kiss of a handsome prince. Doesn’t get much better than this.

Today we dive into RAPUNZEL (all that beautiful hair) who, as a punishment to her parents for stealing greens, was taken when she was a baby, by Mother Gothel. As you’ll see, Gothel got the raw end of that deal. Then we meet MOTHER HOLLE. Lovely old woman. Enormous teeth. I don’t know why. She meets two sisters, one beautiful (of course) and the other, not so much. Who wins out? Let’s see.

Welcome to Season 3. For the next few weeks, we will be presenting GRIMM WOMEN: And the End of Ever After. Original Grimm tales written by Jacob and Wilhelm Grimm. The Introduction, Afterwards, and Villain Voices written by Cathi Colas.

This still falls under the realm of Classics, but with a twist. I brought together some of the more memorable Grimmcesses and since I have always been on the other side of that coin, I wanted to hear from their antagonists. So, they have a say in this too.

I wasn’t sure, when I was putting this together, whether it was still relevant. But I was having an eye-opening conversation with my daughter the other day and I realized that even today, the damage done by Disney to little girls remains. Disney has way better role models now, but back in the day, not so much.

My daughter is getting married in June. She is planning an extravaganza for a wedding. Unfortunately for her, her parents come from plain stock, so the bill is being footed by my daughter and her fiancé, who don’t have this kind of cash.

I asked her why she was doing this and not putting the money down on say, a house? She told me that all her life she dreamed of the ‘fairytale’ wedding. She spent her childhood watching Disney princesses and she almost felt programmed to want this. Not only that, she felt she deserved it.

My daughter is truly a Disney princess come to life. She is beautiful, ethereal, but she is also 31. When do we release the litany of messages that bombard us with the belief that with beauty comes the promise we will have it all.

Did I do this to my daughter. Probably in the beginning. The collection of old VHS movies gathering dust in the attic is testament to my indoctrinating her. I didn’t mean to do this. I just wanted her to be quiet for an hour.

Anyway, this is my take on beauty, Grimmcesses, the voices of the villains, and the end of ever after.

I promise a way shorter Intro next week.

    Here we go.

I hope you have been enjoying these episodes as much as I enjoy bringing them to you.
