Season 10 Episode 6: Emo Dad talks to Kevin Lyman (Warped Tour Founder)

Matt and James were super excited to sit down with Kevin Lyman, the legendary founder of the greatest punk rock festival on earth, Warped Tour.

We discuss Kevin’s early days of putting on house shows and calling the police himself to get people to leave, when we hired an air hanger and accidentally shut down an airport, and booking bands like Red Hot Chilli Peppers to play skate parks.

We then of course chat about the early days of Warped Tour, how it was meant to be a one off and the first bands that were booked. We discuss the culture around the tour, how it’s important to support non profits and how to balance corporate sponsorship with punk rock. We chat about scenes and eras and bringing the festival to the UK.

We hear the exciting developments of this year’s tour, with shows in the States, Canada and Mexico scheduled and loads of amazing bands already announced. It’s going to be mega!

Season 10 Episode 5: Emo Dad talks to Aaron Bruno (AWOLNATION, Barbarians of California)

Matt and James were delighted to catch a quick chat (during a break in band practice) with the man behind megastars AWOLNATION and the incredible hardcore band Barbarians of California, and all round top guy, Aaron Bruno.

We discuss the early days of life, going to see Strife and Snapcase in LA, being inspired to start hardcore bands, before eventually building a hugely successful career with AWOLNATION (over a billion streams worldwide). We chat about how esteemed producer and engineer Eric Stenman and Aaron came together to become friends and bond over a love of heavy music, eventually starting Barbarians of California, working on the band in parallel with AWOLNATION writing.

We discuss what it was like to play their first show at the Troubadour in LA, the reaction to the band, and the influences which have inspired their heavy and quirky style of hardcore.

All this plus Aaron telling off the rest of the band for being too noisy, Cactus drinks, playing with Guns n Roses and so much more.

Season 10 Episode 3: Emo Dad talks to As It Is

Matt and James are buzzing to bring you a truly special interview with the lovely lads from British-American rock band As It Is.

We had an absolute blast chatting with them and, in true Emo Dad interview fashion, there are plenty of laughs, a few distractions, and the kind of questions most “proper” interviewers are too scared to ask. We dive into the bands they were in before As It Is, how the band first came together, and those early years on the grind. We also talk about their ‘large’ and ever-growing fanbase, and how they went from playing tiny rooms to tearing it up on the Warped Tour in no time at all.

We get into style changes, the tougher moments along the way, and how they’ve been enjoying working on new material — with a new album dropping this summer.

Then things get a little niche. We chat about the band training for the Brighton Marathon in aid of the brilliant Mind charity. Matt (who is a running coach) dishes out advice for the weeks ahead, and we somehow end up covering the connection between emo and running, whether filming a music video the day after a marathon is a terrible idea, how to fuel properly, and if stopping to play a gig halfway round the course is technically an option.

It’s pretty bespoke… but trust us, it’s a great time.
