The story revolves around two protagonists who compete from a distance, from the beginning to the end, with a major twist: the former Parma RIS Chief Salvatore Longobucco and the killer who kills while wearing masks of various Shrek movie characters. The crimes are committed in the city of Magenta, and the victims are all young and connected to the Tagliabue dynasty, originally from Piacenza. Secrets and dramatic stories from the past are unearthed by the killer, who has a blind friend who is unaware she is dealing with a man with a split personality.
