[Contains explicit content] As country after country in Europe fell to Germany, the U.S. was unprepared, underequipped, and undermanned. With the first peace-time draft, the influx of new recruits found themselves training with broomsticks instead of rifles. This episode explores the reaction to mandatory service in America and conscientious objectors who paid a steep price for their convictions.

The history and presentation of this episode is great, but one of the guest interviewees, a supposedly educated historian, uses foul language which make this an inappropriate episode to help my kids learn history. Too bad, because what she said could have easily been said with language that wouldn't have been offensive to anyone and wouldn't have lost any meaning or impact.

Unecessary Foul Language

The first ever American peace-time draft. Harsh treatment of conscientious objectors. And a military force barely fit for WW I. This is not the story of the American military with which we familiar. This is such an enlightening series and it's challenging so many preconceptions I didn't even know I had about WW II.
