I'm going to have to go with Occam's Razor on this one. The most simple answer is probably correct. I think they were guilty to some degree. At least the captain and the immigrant. The others may have been innocent fisherman. I think it would be hard for 5 men to maintain their innocence, but the captain going out and being in that situation is a compelling argument. It being stormy also explains why there weren't pictures and they didn't go out looking for the loot. The story is Well done!
