Does justice have a soundtrack? Harvard-trained lawyer Bryan Stevenson has made it his mission to challenge racism in the criminal justice system. He’s the author of the best-selling book “Just Mercy” and was played by Michael B. Jordan in the movie of the same name. Stevenson and Common hold a fascinating conversation about life on death row, the role of music in inspiration, and the best way to bravely live a life that matters.

I loved listening to Bryan speak of his love for music and justice and when he recognized his purpose. The conversation between Common and Byran can be put on repeat as it's a call to action. This conversation alone made me follow Common's work.

Bryan Stevenson really does vibrate on another level. I want to find a way there. I loved how Common asked questions and let Bryan have all the space he wanted to answer. ❤️

Someone asked me recently who, if I could pick anyone alive today, I would most want to have a dinner conversation with and Bryan Stevenson immediately came to mind. Listening to this conversation felt almost like a realization of that dream. I’ve listened to A LOT of interviews with Mr Stevenson and I greatly appreciated how much new territory Common was able to cover, including how the power of musical expression and language has influenced and given shape to his life, his career, even the way he crafts a lyrical defense argument so that it flows and resonates. Huge credit to the generous amount of thought, sincerity and curiosity that Common brings to these interviews. Loved this episode and the one with Misty Copeland. Looking forward to the rest.

Powerful start to a great series
