The bodies of Black women have always been deified and dismissed; sexualized and commodified - and Billie Holiday was no exception. In this episode, host Rebecca Carroll and iconic political activist Dr. Angela Davis explore Billie's relationship to and with her body, and how the singer sought control over her image by using her body her way.©2021 Paramount Audio, a Division of Paramount Pictures Corporation (P)2021 Paramount Audio, a Division of Paramount Pictures Corporation

Throughly enjoyed this Podcast! As a huge fan of Ms. Holiday I appreciate the careful insight and opinions shared in the discussions. I’ve always viewed Ms. Holiday as a vocal musician and not just a vocalist. Her voicing are legendary and worth study. Her life, although viewed by many as tragic, was not a tragedy. She toiled with substance and relationship issues amplified by her profession, popularity, and position. She was not a tragic figure or footnote, but person who gave us a collection of songs which drive our emotions still. Thank Ms. Holiday and thank you Ms. Carroll for your creating and sharing of this podcast.
