Our story begins in a small village of Lamhi, near present day Varanasi. After a lot of difficulties starting a family, Ajaib Lal, a post office clerk and Anandi Devi, were blessed with a daughter who they named 'Suggi'. On 31st July 1880, the couple gave birth to another child, a boy. This boy who was named Dhanpat Rai Srivastava at the time of his birth would later go on to become the legendary Munshi Premchand as we know today. After his birth, Dhanpat Rai Srivastava had several visitors including his uncle, Mahabir, a rich landowner, who nicknamed him ‘Nawab’ meaning ‘Baron’, a nickname that would go on to become one of his very first pen names.
