  • Is This 50? (Happy Birthday, Kim!)
    Mar 24 2026

My favorite human is turning 50! If you know my wife, Kim, you know she is very self-deprecating and adorable about getting older. Kim thought 50 might feel like a big, Oprah-level moment. (Like angels singing... all-knowing wisdom... maybe a sudden ability to fold a fitted sheet.) Instead, it’s been a mix of gratitude, a little existential panic, and a lot of honest questions like:

Is this what 50 is supposed to feel like?

In this episode, we look back at what Kim thought 50 would be (Golden Girls, water aerobics, financial literacy… none of which fully happened) and our team surprises her with messages from some incredibly wise humans who have already crossed into their 50s and beyond. Plus, it's the finale of Kim’s “Road to 50” goals where she shares what she got accomplished.

Thank you for writing to us about what you still don’t know at 50 (turns out… a lot of us are just winging it), and apologies for talking about my bidet for longer than necessary. Happy Birthday, Kim! We love to hear from you! Leave us a message at 323-364-3929 or write the show at podcast@theholdernessfamily.com. You can also watch our podcast on YouTube.

  • Make Sleep Suck Less with Dr. Chris Allen
    Mar 17 2026

If you’re celebrating the rare night when you don’t have to get up to go to the bathroom… welcome. You are among friends. Sleep is one of my favorite topics. Penn and I often joke that I don't have FOMO (Fear of missing out) I have FOMS (Fear of missing sleep). As much as I love sleep, I also struggle with it. So this week, we invited Dr. Christopher J. Allen (also known as "Sleep Dr. Chris") to help us figure out why sleep gets harder as we age and what we can actually do about it.

In this episode we talk about why our sleep changes in midlife, sleep hacks floating around TikTok, how ADHD may impact your sleep, and something many people overlook: Sleep Apnea. Dr. Chris explains how it can affect women, teens, and even kids and why untreated sleep apnea can leave you exhausted no matter how long you’re "sleeping" for.

We definitely walked away with some new ideas on how to help my sleep routine... because as you'll hear on the show being in bed is for three things only and they all start with "S" - Sleep, Sick, and... SANDWICHES! We hope this episode helps you have sweet dreams or at least it helps your sleep sucks a little less. We love to hear from you! Leave us a message at 323-364-3929 or write the show at podcast@theholdernessfamily.com. You can also watch our podcast on YouTube.

  • The Emotional Side of ADHD with Dr. Tamara Rosier (Part 2)
    Mar 10 2026

Last week I shared that I was diagnosed with ADHD at 49. It was a big moment for me, and judging from your messages (thank you for those!) it resonated with a lot of you too. So this week, Penn and I continuing the conversation with someone we absolutely adore, ADHD expert Dr. Tamara Rosier. In this episode we dig into something that doesn’t get talked about nearly enough... the emotional side of ADHD.

Why do ADHDers feel things so big?

Why can small moments feel overwhelming?

Why do shame, perfectionism, and rejection sensitivity show up so often in ADHD brains?

Dr. Tamara walks us through the science, but also gives us metaphors that are so good you’ll never forget them. There’s the swimming pool of emotions. The window of tolerance. And my personal favorite, when two ADHD people meet and suddenly it’s like two squirrels playing in a park. (Which might explain Penn and I better than anything else ever has.) We also talk about ADHD in families, raising kids with big emotions, why so many women are misdiagnosed with anxiety, and how to replace shame with understanding.

This conversation is equal parts therapy session and pep talk. If you’ve ever wondered why your brain works the way it does, or why your emotions sometimes feel louder than everyone else’s, this episode might help you feel a little less alone 🐿️ We love to hear from you! Leave us a message at 323-364-3929 or write the show at podcast@theholdernessfamily.com. You can also watch our podcast on YouTube.

This podcast is so relatable and fun to listen to. There are moments of hilarity but there are also moments of deep emotion. Thought-provoking and fun, great for listening on my walks, while I'm cooking, in the car, and even with my kids (sometimes). Family and relationship thoughts, experiences, and advice.

I love listening to this podcast. So relatable!

I'm not one of those people who can do my work AND listen to a podcast at the same time, which is a real shame because I really enjoy podcasts ... so ever since I started listening to your podcast, my work has begun to suffer. That should be a star or two off but my boss isn't the one writing this review, so ..........

In the latest episode (re: hobbies), I have to say that you are the only other person I have heard who discusses a strong dislike for the word "should". I went through a phase (may still be going through it) where I would respond to all shoulds with an accusation toward the speaker of being a "should-pusher". It doesn't endear me to people, but just know that I get it and I'm glad that you spoke about it because now I don't feel so weird. Right?

So, yea, keep getting in between me and my work - I enjoy it, even if my boss may not.

Pausing work to listen to y'all

It's been a rough year, but I gotta say, stumbling upon the Holderness Family has been one of my favorite parts. I first saw their hilarious song parodies on Facebook a couple of months ago. I was very excited to see they were writing a book, which is how I found out about the podcast! I laugh, and sometimes cry, but I always learn a little something, and get to see things from a new angle. As a newlywed, I strive to have a relationship like Kim and Penn have as the years go by. I love that they share the tools that help them have such an incredible understanding of each other! Thank you so much for being you, and sharing so much of yourselves!

I just love this family!
