Fuel relief is here - for a very select group of Kiwis (and that's not bad that they're getting help) but there's a lot of others who are missing out and the logic isn't fair that's been suggested as to why that is.

Winston returned to his spiritual home this weekend, the place he knows he’ll be the youngest person in the room and the guests special token Maori friend - Tauranga to deliver his “Real” state of the nation - which was as low on facts as you’d expect from the party that thinks DEI is bad and you should show them your genitals before entering a bathroom.

Sure, it was impossible for the government or voters in 2023 to know a future US president and his mate would start a war that lead to the fastest petrol price increase in decades - but alternative transport options that would be handy now were gutted already because of other reasons they were being funded in the first place and the coalition doesn’t like “woke".

There’s a few tools we get trained in to get meaning out of media - and they can be used to see why a comment from a politician trying to sound relatable and totally not racist comes across as the complete opposite to people - this is what we call semiotics, the study of the meaning of words and symbols together.

Jason Isaacs once said on screen that Context is for Kings - and if you saw him say that as Lucius Malfoy it would create a different context than if you saw him say that as Gabriel Lorca in Star Trek or the Grand Inquisitor in Star Wars because context gives meaning to content. This week Nicola Willis complained about context - while her own party spearheads a campaign designed around ignoring context itself, and often we’re not well trained in understanding how we need context to give content meaning.

Beneficiary numbers are up - which gives the Coalition more targets to punch down on. But they keep claiming unemployment is the result of the last government that was in charge 3 years ago or that treasury warned that unemployment would be high - so just how much of the current high number of beneficiaries, his unemployment and hardship it causes down to the current coalition really?
