  • Over the Hill! Pro Cycling Training After 40
    Mar 9 2026

I retired from pro cycling ten years ago, but I still share my exploits and train as much as I can. The questions I get most often are "how much fitness have you lost since the pro days?" And "Are you going back to reclaim the KOM that you first got 8 years ago?"

I came from a world where you train at home, but your race schedule is the real training, so have been pleasantly surprised at the numbers I'm still able to do, with zero race miles in my legs, just doing group rides and workouts on my own, prescribed by my coach since 2014, Frank Overton of Fascat Coaching.

Frank comes on to give an honest assessment of where my numbers have landed 10 years after retirement, and our approach moving forward, as my goals are still cycling performance, but it's now wrapped in more general health, as we think about how I might be able to perform at 50, or 80.

  • The 9 WORST Times I've Buried Myself on a Bike (not counting crashes)
    Mar 3 2026

I pushed myself in every race, every workout, every interval, but the Mauna Kea episode got me thinking about the handful of times where it was another level--where I had more to lose or gain, and I not only emptied the tank, but I left a piece of myself on the road. This video goes through those very special occasions.

Breakaway tactics are complicated so let me BREAK it down for you (get it? Sorry). Basically, it's international diplomacy except bike teams, negotiated at 160 BPM. That's why it goes wrong so often.
