Ever since Lucy Steele revealed her secret engagement to Edward Ferrars, Elinor has had questions, and it's finally time for her to get some answers. It turns out Lucy has been wanting to talk to Elinor too, and the two of them have a lot to say about their common love. Lucy's plans to overcome the many barriers to her marriage seem woefully insufficient to Elinor, and her heart aches as she imagines the future that awaits Edward with Lucy as his wife. With the Steeles remaining at Barton and Lucy eager to bring up the subject with Elinor whenever she can, Elinor feels trapped by her predicament.
