Hobbs and Shelley were The Holmes and Watson of the BBC from 1952 to 1969. Many think they are still the definitive portrayals of the characters on the radio. The Hobbs' Holmes is logical and incisive, but does retain a sense of humor and an obvious affection for his chronicler.

Both actors portrayed their characters with dignity and camaraderie, in keeping with the friendship described by Doyle. The enjoyable plots remained true to the author’s intent. Holmes is not seen as belittling Watson and Watson is not portrayed as a buffoon. I just wish someone would clean up the sound - the hiss reminds me of trying to listen to real old-time radio transmissions…
