What makes this teaching so compelling is how practical it is: virtues aren’t abstract ideas, they are choices we can practice around the dinner table, in hard conversations, and in the quiet moments when nobody is watching.

We also linger on humility, which Climacus treats as the ground beneath every other virtue. Humility isn’t self contempt; it’s the freedom of knowing we need God’s grace in every moment, letting go of pretense, and choosing peace over pride. Salt doesn’t sound like a tool for evangelization, until you meet Saint Rupert. Your day is moving fast, your mind is crowded, and peace can feel like a luxury you cannot reach. We slow everything down with one of the Church’s simplest treasures: the Jesus Prayer, “Lord Jesus Christ, Son of God, have mercy on me, a sinner.” As we pray it and unpack it, we discover why this short line has carried monks, saints, parents, and parish workers through anxiety, distraction, and spiritual dryness, turning ordinary moments into a steady return to God.

We walk through the biblical roots in Luke 18, where mercy is the bold cry of the blind man and the humble confession of the tax collector, and we connect it to Saint Paul’s call to “pray without ceasing.” We also trace the prayer through the early Church and the Desert Fathers and Mothers, who learned that short, repeated prayer can steady the heart when thoughts wander.
