The Function of Thorns

The statistical probability of moving from birth to death without being invaded by a microbe or a systemic failure of the flesh is near zero. These blows are not accidents; they are "thorns" functioning to prevent a man from becoming conceited and to clarify his total dependence on the Creator. While the medical profession offers a temporary reprieve, it cannot offer a permanent exit.
