“For God will never give you the spirit of fear, but the Holy Spirit gives you mighty power, love, and self-control,” 2 Timothy 1:7 TPT. God wants us to have sound minds, sound judgement and self-discipline. These qualities enable us to be doers of God’s Word, not just hearers.

The Holy Spirit equips us with power so that we won’t shrink away from what needs to be done. The Holy Spirit also equips us with love so that we won’t become harsh and rigid with people. God wants us to walk in power and serve others in love.

Paul told Timothy in 1 Timothy 4:7, “Do not waste time arguing over godless ideas and old wives’ tales. Instead, train yourself to be godly.

Paul is saying, “Stay focused on what’s really important. Be disciplined like an athlete running to win.” Walk in the power of the Holy Spirit, the love of the Holy Spirit and the self-control of the Holy Spirit.

• • Be disciplined.
  • Use sound reasoning to do God’s will.
  • Form good habits.
  • Train yourself to be godly.
  • Pray Regularly.
  • Stay in the Word.
  • Worship Often.
  • Serve Others.

“For God has not given us a spirit of fear and timidity, but of power, love, and self-discipline,” 2 Timothy 1:7. This lesson addresses the role that love plays in our ability to overcome fear. Our receiving power, love and a sound mind is not based on our ability to love God or others. It’s about receiving God’s love for us.

“There is no fear in love [dread does not exist], but full-grown (complete, perfect) love turns fear out of doors and expels every trace of terror! For fear brings with it the thought of punishment, and [so] he who is afraid has not reached the full maturity of love [is not yet grown into love’s complete perfection],” 1 John 4:18 (AMPCE).

Let’s back up a verse: “In this [union and communion with Him] love is brought to completion and attains perfection with us, that we may have confidence for the day of judgment [with assurance and boldness to face Him], because as He is, so are we in this world.” John 4:17 (AMPCE). Our love is completed and perfected in our union and communion with God. In other words, it doesn’t happen by just getting saved, which is our union with God. We have to get to know God by getting to know His Word, which is our communion, our fellowship or agreement. The end result is confidence!

Fear, or timidity, is a lack of courage. The spirit of fear is used by the enemy to prevent us from effectively applying God’s Word to our lives to live a victorious life. We overcome the spirit of fear and timidity by walking in the spirit of God’s power, God’s love and God’s self-discipline (or sound mind). In this lesson, we will focus on the Spirit of Power, the Holy Spirit Who equips us with power, love and a sound mind. “For God has not given us a spirit of fear and timidity, but of power, love, and self-discipline,” 2 Timothy 1:7.
