It Started as a little dog training business in Shawnee, KS. It was then a blog, and then we wrote some books! Videos next and a YouTube channel. We figured a podcast was the next logical step. What will you get? Honest, positive, science-based talks about all things dogs and dog training. We are all about training owners vs training dogs and we strive to teach folks to reward the behaviors they want vs. looking to correct the behaviors they don't want! It is all about redirection, rewarding, and reinforcing what it is you want your pup to do.© 2026 The Keep it Simple Stupid DOG Training Podcast Relationships Social Sciences

Leave It vs Drop It: The Most Misunderstood Commands in Dog Training

Many dog owners use “leave it” and “drop it” like they mean the same thing—but they don’t. And mixing them up can actually slow down your dog’s training and create confusion.

In this episode of the KISS Dog Training Podcast, Mike of KISS Dog Training in Shawnee, KS (serving the Kansas City Metro), Mike breaks down the clear difference between these two essential commands and why using them correctly makes training faster, smoother, and more effective for both you and your dog.

    You’ll learn:

🐾 The simple difference between leave it and drop it
🐾 Why confusing these cues causes training problems
🐾 How to teach leave it step-by-step to build impulse control
🐾 How to teach drop it without creating conflict or tug battles
🐾 Why these two skills are critical for preventing future behavior issues

By the end of this video, you’ll know how to use leave it to prevent problems before they start and drop it to safely get items back from your dog—without stress or frustration.

Why is my dog stubborn? Time for a Dog Training Reset

Ever feel like your dog is being stubborn—ignoring cues they definitely know, pushing boundaries, or suddenly “forgetting” their training? Before you chalk it up to bad behavior, let’s pause. What if it’s not stubbornness at all… but overwhelm?

In this episode of the KISS Dog Training Podcast, Mike of KISS Dog Training in Shawnee, KS (serving the Kansas City Metro), Mike unpacks how stress, inconsistent routines, and too many expectations can leave both you and your dog feeling fried. We talk about the signs your dog is mentally overloaded, how humans unintentionally contribute to the chaos, and why going back to basics can be the most powerful move you make.

You’ll learn how to give your dog a true training reset by establishing clear routines, simplifying communication, and creating structure that actually reduces stress (for everyone). If training feels like a constant battle lately, this episode will help you reset, reconnect, and move forward with clarity and confidence.

Because sometimes the best progress comes from slowing down, not pushing harder. 🐾

In this episode of the KISS Dog Training Podcast, Mike of KISS Dog Training in Shawnee, KS (serving the Kansas City Metro) breaks down three powerful, practical techniques every dog owner should be using: hand feeding, redirection with “leave it”, and rewarding your dog for their hard work.

Learn how hand feeding can strengthen your bond, improve focus, and create better engagement during training. Mike explains when and how to use redirection effectively—especially by practicing the “leave it” cue—to help dogs make better choices without frustration or punishment. Finally, he dives into why rewarding your dog matters, how to reward correctly, and how positive reinforcement builds confidence, trust, and long-lasting results.
