As we close out Black Music Month in our season finale, we honor the modern versions of negro spirituals showcased by some millennial hip hop classics.

You can't tell me that the beginning of "Swag Surfin" isn't an altar call to get close to your friends and place your arms around each others shoulders as ya sway in unison, or that "Wipe Me Down" isn't a confidence booster for the person in the middle of the club as strangers circle up to wipe down their shoulders, chest, pants, shoes and don't even get me started about if "Knuck If You Buck" would have been the anthem to African resistance to enslavement.

Texas was the last state of the Confederacy in which enslaved Black people officially gained their freedom. June 19th, 1865 is that historic day.

Black folks in Kentucky and Delaware were not declared free until December of 1865… months after what we know as Juneteenth.

Are we still free today? What can freedom look like for future generations?

In another vulnerable episode, this audio experience describes Jewel's thoughts and feelings on not having a relationship with her mother and how they got to that point. After decades of a cycle that showed patterns of toxicity, she decided to hop off of that rollercoaster and focus on healing herself so that she can shift the lineage for the better.
