Episode 7: “When You Get What You Want” (Judges 9)

Israel keeps falling further and further into rebellion and amnesia with God. God raises up Abimelech, not as a judge but as an “anti-judge” who would make himself king. The oppression of Israel doesn’t come from without but from within. This time, God’s judgment on Israel is to give them exactly what they want. In this story, we see the horror of God’s “yes.”

Yet it did not take long for them to forget the LORD and the mighty works He had done on their behalf. Even so, the LORD remained faithful to His people and to His promises in spite of their sin. His grace is on display, even in Judges.
