Woodland spirits are mythical guardians. In European folklore they are benevolent, wise, tree-dwelling entities also known as guardians of the Forest: these spirits are believed to protect trees, wildlife, and travellers, often portrayed as "green men" with faces formed from leaves, hair, and bark. Other supernatural creatures are also said to dwell in trees and forests, from dryads, Oreads and Jack O' The Green to Brownies and pixies.
