A historical romance set in London, a small English town, and Paris. Remarkably well-crafted, with nuanced male and female characters, this book launched Georgette's 53-book best-selling career.

I love the Georgette Heyer books., but struggled to make it through this due to the narration. It was choppy, the narrator struggled over some of the words. Timing was poor, so much of the drama & humor was missing. Also, background music through the whole thing was annoying.

Not a good narration

So sad that such a delightful and amusing story was butchered by an inappropriate reader who did not seem to reflect a genuine understanding and appreciation of Georgette Heyer.

I gave the story three stars but, in truth, I am in no position to evaluate it since I found this rendition unbearable.
The narrator was annoying in the extreme: his voice and accent were extremely grating, and he sounded sarcastic, even when that probably wasn’t his intent. And he just read the story-no attempt at characterization or drama.
A piano played in the background throughout, without apparent purpose…
This recording was probably a work of love by an amateur. It needed a professional production.

I love Georgette Heyer books and have read most and listened to several, but I was astounded when the reader was a gravely voiced man with a terrible American accent who could not pronounce most of the titles or the names, and murdered the French. I was so disappointed and I could not finish it. I will have to get the book to see how all things worked out.

Excruciating to listen to the reader

This rating has nothing to do with the novel and everything to do with the recording. One of the anticipated joys of hearing a Georgette Heyer novel as an audio book is to hear the vernacular in which it was written. This version doesn't live up to my expectations. The narrator doesn't even pretend to put the story into context. I will return it as soon as possible.
